Customer Rating: Summary: The worse piece of software I've ever owned Comment: I have to admit I fell victim to Apple's cool commercials and felt I was finally able to "move over to a Mac". Unfortunately 97% of the business world still uses Word, PPT and Excel and Steve Jobs which says you can run your PC on your MAC right? Yes...they do run...if you absolutely must have a PC limping along....but THIS IS NOT LIKE RUNNING A SEAMLESS PC ON YOUR MAC...IT IS SLOW, BUGGY AND UNSTABLE.
Parallels 4.0 for Mac is terribly unstable, crashing contantly and performance on a brand new MAC with 8GB of RAM is atrocious. Printing is the most unintuitive exercise I have been in a long time and lose much of the capability of your local native printer when run in emultation. Constant nagging issues like Parallels can't seem to figure out how to keep Windows clock current...the answer from Parralels tech support?...."Oh just reinstall Parallels, just reinstall your virtual OS and reinstall all of your applications......"
The support organization vectors you to India for excruitatingly long technical support.
If you really need to have one foot in the PC world and want to be cool and have MAC...don't do this trust me.... Buy a PC; Everything I read about Mac 2008 Office doesn't make me want to run out and spend $150 with MSFT but I may have to so I can get rid of Parallels which is frankly the worst piece of software I have ever owned.
Please MSFT make a real version of Office for the MAC!
Customer Rating: Summary: Virtually unusable Comment: I can't believe I paid money for this. I bought it so that I can use Excel macros because Mac doesn't support macros. I installed Windows XP and my old copy of Microsoft Office. Windows hangs constantly. It often gets into this mode where it takes 5-10 minutes to execute every command. I can't get any help from the company because I was too busy to worry about it during the first 30 days and you have to pay for any support, phone or email, after 30 days. There is not anyone who will even answer the phone for sales questions, I get routed to the tech support queue every time. In that queue, you can't even get past the menu without a support code. I tried to send an email, but you have to have a support code ($$). I tried to post to their forum, but they seem to have blocked my post because I called their product "junk".
I can't seem to configure Windows to connect to the internet, so I can't update the Windows software.
Support is pay or nothing, so only buy it if you like to roll the dice.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Software - Newer Version out now Comment: This is great software for running Window XP on your Mac. I haven't tried Vista, and I wouldn't recommend Vista to ANYONE. Vista is the reason I switched to Mac after 18 years of using Microsoft Operating systems.
Back to the review. Parallels 4.0 running on my MacBook Pro with 2 Core Duo and 4GB of RAM runs Windows XP faster than it ever did on any of my PC based systems. The amazing thing is you can be running both operating systems at the same time and never see a lag. I do website development and need a testing environment. This is a perfect solution.
I would have given it 5 stars, but there are features that were missing that are now available in the NEWEST version 5.0. Wait for Amazon to start offering 5.0 or go to their website for the latest version. I know I will be upgrading soon.
Customer Rating: Summary: Warning on Parallels 4.0 Upgrades Comment: I'm a long time Parallels 2.0 user and it generally gets the job done but is slow and bulky. Upgrading had tons of appeal but I was careless when I started my upgrade and didn't have my original Windows XP disks and product codes handy in advance. In fact I could find them and got hosed. After I had begun the upgrade and couldn't reload the Windows XP OS my new parallels wouldn't run; my old parallels was automatically de-installed; and I couldn't figure out how to access my original windows XP from memory. Turned out to be a pricey upgrade. $70 for the parallels and $200 for another copy of Windows XP. Paying Billy Gates another $200 for his crap software was the real injustice. I moved to Mac to get the guy and his terrible software out of my life. I guess I should blame the folks at Quicken who refuse to make a decent Quicken for Mac program. Just don't make my mistake. Make sure you have your Windows disks and product codes at the ready or seriously question upgrading.
Customer Rating: Summary: Crash and Burn Comment: Lots of great things said about Parallels in these reviews but my experience was horrible, and I use computers a lot. Running windows on my MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard was a nightmare of crashes every 30 minutes and long long pauses when the screen froze. I installed ArcGIS which took most of an afternoon and then Parallels told me that I had no virtual machine installed! I deleted it and plan to return it for a refund and run Windows with Bootcamp, which I know works flawlessly and without long unresponsive pauses.
